Quality Mattress
Sleep is one of the most important parts of your life because when you don’t get enough, nothing else seems to go right. One of the best ways to fall asleep easily is to create a comfortable environment. If you are currently sleeping on an old mattress, you may need to think about replacing it, especially if you have trouble falling asleep. Investing in a quality mattress is investing in you!
If you absolutely cannot afford to replace your mattress consider getting a pillow top for you existing mattress. While you are at it, getting quality sheets can go a long way toward helping you fall asleep fast! (It can even help with middle insomnia)
Temperature
A room that is too hot or too cold can make it difficult to fall asleep. Most people sleep best in a room that is around 65 degrees. This is cool enough that you can still snuggle in with a good blanket, but not so cold that you are uncomfortable. Obviously you should adjust this to your personal preferences. Studies do indicate that most people do not sleep well in a room that is more than 70 degrees.
Clean Environment
Did you know that physical clutter can lead to mental clutter? When your room is a mess it is difficult to get a good night’s sleep. You should always take 10 minutes to pick up your room before you start winding down at night. This is one of the best natural ways to fall asleep. Make sure that there aren’t clothes lying around and that your floor is free of clutter.
You should also make sure that your sheets get washed every week and that you make your bed each day. Struggling with sheets and blankets after you are already in bed can create a restless nights sleep. NEVER eat in your bed – especially nothing crumbly.
Dark
Studies show that we sleep better in a room that is completely dark. If your current blinds or curtains don’t do the trick at keeping the light out, you may consider getting blackout shades. This will prevent the light from a bright streetlight from leaking in. If this isn’t possible or if work requires you to get your sleep during the day, you should consider getting a sleep mask to help keep it dark and make falling asleep easier.
Keep Electronics out of Your Room
While we are on the subject of darkness, you should know that the lights from digital displays can impact the quality of your sleep. The best thing you can do is keep computers and TV’s out of your room. Many people like to watch TV in bed, but if you are looking for ways to fall asleep, this probably is not a good idea for you. Studies show that watching TV can keep you up longer and hurt the quality of your sleep.
As far as your alarm clock, you should either find a clock that does not have a digital display or cover yours. This can also keep you from staying up all night watching the clock.
Don’t suffer through the side effects of insomnia! Improve your environment!
